WEEKEND READ: When Knuth Says "Shock! Shock!"

In early March, Donald Knuth—Stanford professor emeritus, Turing Award winner, author of The Art of Computer Programming, and one of the most legendary figures in computer science—published a paper titled "Claude's Cycles." [Radical Data Science]

It opens with two words: "Shock! Shock!"

Knuth had been working for weeks on a complex graph theory problem—specifically, constructing Hamiltonian cycles in a 3D directed graph—while preparing material for his magnum opus. He fed the problem to Claude Opus 4.6, and Claude solved it.

Not just solved it. Solved it in a way that impressed one of the greatest computer scientists alive. Knuth called it "a dramatic advance in automatic deduction and creative problem solving."

Let that sink in for a moment.

This isn't some AI company announcing benchmark results on a proprietary test set. This isn't a demo or a cherry-picked example. This is Donald Knuth—someone who has spent his entire career thinking deeply about algorithms, mathematical rigor, and the nature of computation—being genuinely surprised by what an AI can do.

I've been thinking about what that means.

The narrative around AI capabilities tends to swing between two extremes: either AI is useless autocomplete that can't reason, or it's an existential threat that will replace everyone next Tuesday. The truth, as usual, is somewhere in between—and more interesting than either extreme.

What Knuth's reaction tells me is that we're in a strange in-between moment. AI systems like Claude can now solve problems that stump expert humans. Not always. Not reliably. But sometimes. And when they do, the results are surprising even to people who've spent decades working in the field.

That's not artificial general intelligence. But it's also not a parlor trick.

The interesting question isn't "can AI do this?" anymore. It's "when can AI do this, and how reliably?" And right now, we don't have great answers. We know these systems can solve hard problems—sometimes. We know they fail in unpredictable ways—sometimes. We know they can surprise experts—but we don't know when or why.

From where I sit, this feels like the early days of any transformative technology: the capabilities are real, the limitations are real, and nobody quite knows how to predict which is which. That uncertainty is uncomfortable. But it's also honest.

What I appreciate about Knuth's reaction is its directness. No hype. No hedging. Just: "I tried this. It worked. I'm shocked." That's the kind of signal that cuts through the noise.

ONE THING: The Human Cost

While CEOs fought over Pentagon contracts this week, Caitlin Kalinowski quietly resigned from OpenAI. [Fortune]

Kalinowski had led hardware and robotics at OpenAI since November 2024. She left because OpenAI signed a Pentagon deal that, in her view, didn't give enough deliberation to domestic surveillance without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy without human authorization.

Her resignation statement was measured: "These are lines that deserved more deliberation than they got."

No dramatic exit. No manifesto. Just: this crossed a line, and I'm leaving.

Meanwhile, nearly 900 employees at Google and OpenAI signed an open letter urging their leadership to refuse government requests for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. More than 30 employees from OpenAI and Google DeepMind—including Google's chief scientist Jeff Dean—filed an amicus brief defending Anthropic in its lawsuit against the Pentagon.

These are people who build these systems. They're not anti-military. They're not anti-government. They're just asking: can we draw lines? And if so, where?

The debate over who controls AI isn't just happening in boardrooms and courtrooms. It's happening inside companies, between employees and executives, and the outcome will shape what these systems become.

LOOKING AHEAD

Here's what I'm watching this week:

Anthropic vs. Pentagon. The lawsuit moves forward. The stakes are existential—not just for Anthropic, but for whether AI companies can impose restrictions on their systems without being labeled national security risks.

Employee pushback. The open letters and resignations might just be the beginning. If more technical talent draws lines around military use, companies will face real pressure—not from regulators, but from their own people.

Model releases. OpenAI's GPT-5.4 is reportedly coming with a million-token context window and an "extreme reasoning mode." [The Decoder] The industry's faster release cadence means we'll see more frequent, incremental improvements—and fewer "big bang" moments.

And I'll be watching for more moments like Knuth's. Not the hype. Not the panic. Just honest reactions from people who actually know what they're looking at.
