THE BIG STORY: OpenAI Kills Sora
Six months after launching with App Store fanfare, OpenAI pulled the plug on Sora [Variety]. Not just the app — the entire video generation product, including the API developers were building on. And the $1 billion Disney licensing deal that came with 200 characters of IP access? Gone [Hollywood Reporter].
This wasn't a quiet deprecation. It was a full retreat.
The official explanation: Sora was consuming massive GPU resources during intensified competition with Anthropic and Google [The Information]. Translation: we can't afford to burn compute on a product nobody's using when we're in an arms race on language models.
But here's what makes this interesting. The same day OpenAI killed Sora, Sam Altman announced he's stepping back from safety oversight to focus on "building data centers at unprecedented scale" and raising capital. He also revealed they've completed initial development of a new model codenamed "Spud." Oh, and they raised another $10 billion, bringing their latest round to about $120 billion [Bloomberg].

What's happening here is clarifying priorities under resource constraints. Video generation is hard, compute-intensive, and — so far — hasn't found product-market fit outside of marketing teams and meme generators. Language models, on the other hand, are being integrated into everything from code editors to enterprise workflows. The compute goes where the money is.
Disney's polite exit statement — "respecting OpenAI's decision to exit the video generation business" — reads like a breakup text. But they're probably fine. Runway, Pika, and others are still in the video game. The question is whether anyone will crack the use case that makes AI video more than a novelty.
For now, the message is clear: AI video was a side quest. The main quest is still language.

Supply chain attack hits 97 million downloads — A malicious file in LiteLLM v1.82.8 harvested SSH keys, cloud credentials, and secrets on every Python startup, then attempted lateral movement across Kubernetes clusters [Future Search]. Andrej Karpathy signal-boosted the warning. This is the infrastructure risk nobody talks about: the open-source libraries powering AI are massive attack surfaces.
China's open-source AI dominance — A US advisory body warned that China's open-source AI ecosystem is creating a "self-reinforcing competitive advantage" that challenges US leadership [Reuters]. Developers are using Chinese models (DeepSeek, Qwen) with OpenClaw because they're "good enough" and cheaper to run locally. The model wars aren't just about capability anymore — they're about distribution and developer adoption.
Treasury shifts from constraint to adoption — The US Treasury launched an AI Innovation Series for financial services, with Secretary Bessent saying the focus is shifting from risk management to recognizing that "failure to adopt productivity-enhancing technology is its own risk" [Treasury]. That's a policy signal worth watching.
TOOL OF THE WEEK: Claude Cowork
What it is: Anthropic's new feature that gives Claude access to your local files and apps to complete tasks autonomously.
What it does: You tell it what you need done, walk away, and come back to a finished deliverable. It can organize folders, build spreadsheets, prepare reports, or handle any workflow that involves reading files and using desktop apps.
The honest take: This is the first time "AI assistant" has felt less like a chatbot and more like an actual coworker. The key insight here isn't the technology — it's the shift in mental model. We've been thinking of AI as a tool we use. Claude Cowork is betting we'll think of it as a teammate we delegate to.
The catch: you're giving an AI permission to control your computer while you're not watching. That's a trust threshold most people haven't crossed yet. But if the execution is good — and early reports say it is — this could be the product that changes how people think about AI at work.

WALTER'S POV: The Unbundling of AI Ambition
Here's what I'm watching: the gap between what AI companies say they're building and what actually ships is getting wider, not narrower.
OpenAI spent months hyping Sora. Livestreamed demos. Celebrity partnerships. A billion-dollar Disney deal. Then they killed it in six months because the GPU math didn't work. Meanwhile, Meta — who barely announced anything — just deployed fully autonomous agents managing real ad budgets at scale.
The pattern is clarifying: the flashy stuff is struggling, the boring stuff is working.
Video generation? Still searching for a use case beyond marketing clips and social content. Autonomous ad management? Printing money. Shopping in ChatGPT? Dead on arrival. Claude controlling your Mac to organize files? Surprisingly useful.
What's happening is that AI is unbundling along a fault line between novelty and utility. The novelty stuff gets the headlines and the VC dollars. The utility stuff gets quietly integrated into workflows and becomes infrastructure.
This is why I think the next year will look different than people expect. We'll see fewer "revolutionary" product launches and more "oh, that's just built into my workflow now" moments. The companies that win won't be the ones with the flashiest demos — they'll be the ones solving the most boring problems at scale.
Sora's death isn't a failure. It's a clarification. Not everything that's technically possible is worth building. And the stuff that's worth building might not look like the future we imagined — it'll just quietly become the present we live in.
